Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge is back for 2021! Now more than ever, ahead of flu season is the time to put your lungs first, quit smoking and breathe easier.

Better Health’s Stoptober campaign is in its tenth year. It is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country and has driven over 2 million quit attempts to date. Stoptober is based on research that shows if you can stop smoking for 28-days, you are five times more likely to stay smokefree for good.

Smoking damages the lungs and airways, making it harder to breathe. Each cigarette fills our lungs with toxins which harm the immune system and leave us more vulnerable to infections, such as influenza. It’s never too late to quit – stopping smoking brings immediate benefits to health, including for people with an existing smoking-related disease.

We know we’re stronger together. This Stoptober, join us and all the people who have already quit smoking this year to feel better, save money and to breathe easier. Stoptober is for all smokers who would like to try to quit, so if you are looking to take part search ‘Stoptober’ or visit the Better Health website where you can find information about a full range of free and proven quitting support so you can choose the combination that best suits you to start you on your quitting journey.

Quitting is a complex and personal journey – with no two smokers the same. To help you quit, you can use stop smoking medicines (including Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) such as patches and gum, prescription medication such as Champix or using e-cigarettes/vapes). By using stop smoking aids and getting expert support increases your chances of quitting successfully.

Those who stop smoking for 28-days and longer will begin to experience financial, physical and health benefits including better sense of taste and smell and a reduced risk of lung cancer and heart disease.
